Alito Lobby

yesterday i had a really neat experience lobbying against the Alito confirmation with a group from the religious coalition for reproductive choice. there were clergy members from numerous target states as far away as maine and new mexico that flew in for the day to talk to their senators and represent their congregations and other people of faith. it was so incredible to listen to these clergy speak because they were a) already amazing speakers and b) had such a neat and compelling perspective on the issue.
many stressed the need for a stronger democratic party and voiced their opinions that if the democrats didn't stand up now against alito's confirmation and his extremist agenda then we would be suffering the consequences for decades.
2 UU ministers, Rev. Calvin Dame from Maine and Rev. Deb Haffner from CT represented our denomination very well as they both gave powerful testimony as to why Senators need to oppose Alito. i'm so proud to be a UU.
another compelling aspect of this group was that many were practicing clergy in the late 60's early 70's before the roe v. wade decision. they testified as to the drastic dangerous decisions many women faced and many of these clergy were involved in networks that helped women receive safe, illegal abortions by willing brave physicians. these stories were chilling and reemphasized why we need to work to keep abortion legal.
